McAllen to open community cooling centers ahead of heat wave

MCALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The City of McAllen will be offering its community facilities for families to cool down during the Memorial Day weekend heat wave.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures this weekend are expected to reach up to 117 degrees Fahrenheit.

Three McAllen community centers will be open for the public to beat the heat, access Wi-Fi or recharge phones.

The following community centers will serve as a cooling center this weekend:

  • Lark Community Center located on 2601 Lark Avenue
  • Las Palmas Community Center located on 1921 N. 25th Street
  • Palm View Community Center located on 3401 Jordan Road

All three McAllen public library locations will also serve as cooling centers.

The city welcomes the public to stay out of the heat and visit a McAllen library location. Patrons are not required to have a library card to visit the library.

  • McAllen Main Library located on 4001 N. 23rd Street
  • Lark Branch Library located on 2601 Lark Avenue
  • Palm View Branch Library located on 3401 N. Jordan Avenue

The cooling centers will open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, May 24 until Monday, May 27.
