At a McAllen school board meeting on Tuesday, a one-time retention incentive of $600 was approved for all full-time district employees.
McAllen ISD Superintendent René Gutiérrez said the efforts to balance the budget, make up the deficit and increase the fund balance over the past year has resulted in an incentive for the staff during the Christmas season.
“Because we could afford it and we had the monies for that so, we wanted to build morale, and we wanted to say thank you to the employees by giving them this incentive,” Gutiérrez said. “We appreciate all the work they do for our students at McAllen ISD.”
A PowerPoint presentation at the meeting stated, “Administration is recommending to provide a one-time retention incentive pay … to current District employees as a strategic measure to promote workforce stability, minimize turnover, maintain program continuity, improve employee-employer relations, and ultimately advance the educational mission of the District.”
The eligibility criteria for the incentive pay are those who are employed by the district on a full-time basis as of Tuesday.
A full-time employee defined by the district is someone who works at least 27.5 hours per week.
The incentive pay is set to be paid this month and will cost the district about $1.95 million for around 3,254 employees.
Out of the total number of full-time employees, teachers at the district make the bulk, having around 1,512.
The incentive pay also includes bus drivers and bus aides, who are the smallest group with around 84 employees.
