McAllen hosts first 'SHINES' community recognition ceremony

McALLEN, (ValleyCentral) — The City of McAllen and McAllen Public Works's city-wide initiative "McAllen SHINES" recognized its first community champion, Alonzo Cantu.

The initiative is designed to recognize outstanding citizens in McAllen who work to make the city a better place to live.

McAllen Parks and Recreation hosts tree planting ceremony

Cantu was recognized for his outstanding leadership and beautification of McAllen business spaces.

McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos says this is the first of many awards and can go to anyone who is a community champion.

"Everybody can be part of the movement," Villalobos said. "Get involved in your community. Make your residences the cleanest and the best you can."
