Maytag representative: Don’t drink the water coming out of your faucet

3 weeks ago 55

MISSION, Texas – A water resource specialist for Laredo-based commercial appliance company Maytag has been going door to door to test the quality of water coming out of the faucets in homes across the Rio Grande Valley.

Caleb Alvarez said the quality is often not great. Once he proves that to the residents he meets he tries to persuade them to purchase a Maytag water filtration system.

The Rio Grande Guardian interviewed Alvarez at the home of famed Mission environmental activist Ester Salinas. She praised him for his work and said she would be purchasing Maytag equipment.

“We’re trying to create that awareness of the water that we use every day is really contaminated and it’s affecting our lives. It’s affecting our health,” Alvarez said.

Alvarez said the quality of the water varies from city to city.

“For example, the water here in Mission is not the same quality as McAllen or Pharr or Weslaco,” he said.

Asked to rank the cities, Alvarez said: “I would say the worst are the ones that are closer to the border, like Hidalgo, Progreso. The better ones are McAllen and Pharr.”
