BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Cameron County kicked off the new year by swearing in newly appointed sheriff Manuel Treviño.
Treviño won the Cameron County sheriff's election against his opponent Jimmy Manrrique. During his campaign, he highlighted his 30 years of law enforcement experience as the reason why he was right for the job.
"My 30-plus years is what got me here and I'm so happy, so glad to be able to work with such a great group of people," Sheriff Treviño said.
Treviño became emotional during his swearing-in, noting that it's been a long three years of campaigning with many people to thank for his success.
As his eyes swelled with tears he said he practiced containing his emotions, but it was, "Unavoidable because to get here it took tons of people and to be able to say thank you is not enough."
Cameron County District Attorney Luis Saenz and CountyvJudge Eddie Treviño Jr. spoke at the swearing-in ceremony. They both said they look forward to working with the sheriff and they look forward to the amount of experience he brings to the job.
"I know that he has the passion for law enforcement, I know that he has the experience and I know he has the desire to work with the DA's office and anybody else to provide for a safe community," District Attorney Luis Saenz said.
Treviño said he plans to increase patrols across the county and increase staff at the county jail to hold more federal prisoners.
"People can expect a lot more patrol on the streets," he said. "We are pushing more officers, working together with my county judge and the county commissioners and we're going to get more funding so we can get more people on the streets cause that's where we need them."
