LUPE Votes encouraged by new poll showing Vallejo closing in on De La Cruz

SAN JUAN, Texas – LUPE Votes says it is encouraged by a new poll showing its endorsed Congressional District 15 candidate, Michelle Vallejo, is within three points of unseating U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz.

In 2022, De La Cruz, a Republican, defeated Vallejo, a Democrat, by eight percentage points. The district used to be a safe Democratic seat but was gerrymandered to favor Republicans in the Texas Legislature in 2001.

A CD15 poll conducted by House Majority PAC has Vallejo just three points away from De La Cruz, 45 percent to 48 percent. House Majority PAC is the leading group helping to propel Democrats to the House of Representatives.

“This election is about more than one candidate or party; it’s about the type of country we want to live in. South Texans will play a pivotal role in one of the toughest congressional races in the country. Our people, nuestro pueblo, can be the deciding vote,” said Martha Sanchez, a LUPE Votes board member.

“Every day at LUPE Votes, we talk to hard-working South Texans who worry about making a living, lowering the cost of health care, and their families’ futures. We spend our days organizing and mobilizing to hold politicians accountable for their promises and working with our communities for the fair share we deserve in this great country.”

LUPE Votes is the advocacy partner of the La Unión del Pueblo Entero (LUPE). LUPE was founded in 1989 by farmworker and civil rights leaders Cesar E. Chavez and Dolores Huerta. The group says it is an electoral and political organizing vehicle that can help win justice for working-class South Texans.

“This election, we have a choice, and when we weigh all of the important issues that our community faces across South Texas, that choice becomes clear,” Sanchez said.

“While Monica De La Cruz is busy scratching the backs of MAGA extremists, LUPE Votes members are focused on engaging our community and electing leaders who are committed to creating the opportunities working people need to build a better life – in Texas Congressional District 15 that is Michelle Vallejo.”

Sanchez added: “LUPE Votes is a Pueblo-lead organization composed of members from working-class communities across South Texas colonias. We intend to have our voice heard this election, and the nation’s eyes are on us.”

Vallejo hopes the new poll will energize her supporters to work even harder to restore CD15 to the Democratic column.

“It’s clear that Monica De La Cruz’s extremist record in Congress is making life harder for families in Texas’ 15th Congressional District and is why our campaign’s momentum continues to build” Vallejo said.

“More than ever, voters in South Texas are telling us they want a congresswoman who works for them, not the most extreme members of their party. As the next congresswoman from Texas-15, I am more committed than ever to protecting social security and medicare, finding real solutions for our border, and restoring the fundamental freedoms that so many Texas women had taken away.”
