PHARR, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Congressional District 15 democratic delegate Eric Holguin said Texas Democrats have decided to endorse Kamala Harris as the democratic party presidential nominee following President Biden dropping out.

President Biden endorsed Vice President Harris after announcing on Sunday that he was dropping out of the 2024 presidential election.

Holguin said he will be going to Chicago on August 18th for the Democratic National Convention set to take place from Aug. 19 to 22. As a DNC delegate, Holguin can cast a vote for the party's presidential nominee. He says Harris will carry the torch President Biden is passing on to her and highlight local issues.

"Selecting her to carry the torch that President Biden is passing on is a continuation of policies and I think she'll go even further than what we saw under President Biden to ensure our communities are uplifted," Holguin said.

Holguin said Harris has received a lot of support from the democratic party and he believes she'll do well in appealing to younger voters.

"We're kind of seeing this Obama-era energy happening right now around Vice President Harris because she is 'young' and she's got an electrifying personality that a lot of people are drawn to, especially our young voters who are going to be absolutely crucial in this upcoming election," Holguin said.

The District 15 area that Holguin represents includes a thin strip of South Texas from Hidalgo County to Guadalupe County. During Democratic National Conventions, delegates are able to voice concerns and important topics, highlighting their districts at a national level.

"We're really representing the democratic party down here in the Rio Grande Valley and making sure that those at the top in the Democratic National Party, the people who are high up in the higher levels, that they're paying attention to us," Holguin said.
