Last call to register for SPI’s annual triathlon

South Padre Island’s annual triathlon is set for this Sunday, which will offer Olympic and sprint distance courses to ensure athletes can enjoy the challenge.

“We’re thrilled to welcome triathletes back to South Padre Island for another exciting edition of the SPI Triathlon,” Visit South Padre Island Executive Director Blake Henry said in a news release.

The annual event will give participants the chance to race through the city’s landscapes, the release stated.

The Olympic distance course features a 1,500 meter swim, a 40 kilometer bike ride and a 10 kilometer run, while the sprint distance course features a 750 meter swim, 20 kilometer bike ride and a 5 kilometer run. Additionally, there will be a sprint relay for those seeking to work as a team.

Spectators can cheer on triathletes and loved ones at Jim’s Pier, the release stated.

The last day to register is 7 p.m. Friday. The fees for the courses are as follows: the sprint course is $110, the Olympic course is $125 and the relay sprint course is $160.
