EDINBURG, Texas – Dr. Daniel P. King, executive director of Region One Education Service Center, says he was excited to see Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez set up the Hidalgo County Prosperity Task Force.

The purpose of the task force is to eliminate poverty and boost the value of human capital in the region. On an Hidalgo County podcast titled RGV On the Rise, King said the work of the task force aligns with his work for Region One.

The host of the podcast, Hidalgo County Public Affairs Director Carlos Sanchez, said to Dr. King: “Dr King, in addition to your leadership role with Region One, you’ve taken a role on Hidalgo County’s Prosperity Task Force. And a lot of what you’re saying seems to align with the philosophy of Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez, and that is the development of human capital. Can you elaborate a little bit on that?”

King responded: “Yes, it’s very much aligned. I was very excited to see the county judge’s initiative. Immediately I knew that Region One could play a role in that initiative. First of all, as educators, human capital is… that’s our focus, right? And it’s exciting when you see a county judge, or when you see economic development corporations and chambers and so forth… the more that the emphasis can be on human capital, I think that’s the secret sauce. I think that’s where we begin to win the game of quality of life and economic development and those kind of things.”

So, the development of human capital equates to economic development itself, Sanchez asked. “Absolutely,” said King.

Dr. King, a former superintendent of Hidalgo and Pharr-San Juan-Alamo school districts, was on Sanchez’s show to discuss a dropout recovery program targeting adults that Region One wants school districts across the region to adopt.
