Jury selected in capital murder case for deadly robbery

ELSA, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A man who was arrested in Alabama while out on bond for capital murder is scheduled for a trial next week.

Jose Angel Becerra is facing charges of capital murder by terror threat/other felony and attempt to commit capital murder, according to public records. On Friday, a jury was selected for his trial.

An indictment charges Becerra with killing Jesus de Jose Estrada Hinojosa by shooting him during an aggravated robbery. The indictment also states that Becerra attempted to murder another man during the same transaction.

According to previous ValleyCentral reports, both Jose Becerra and his brother Isaac Becerra are accused of shooting the men on Nov. 11, 2018.

Jose was initially given a $1.1 million bond, but his bond was later reduced following motions from his legal team. He posted a $107,000 bond and was released from jail in 2019.

Before his release, Becerra was charged with an additional count of obstruction or retaliation, for threatening to murder the man he attempted to murder in 2018 for being a witness, an indictment states.

In December 2021, while out on bond, the state filed a motion to increase/revoke Becerra's bond. They stated that he failed several conditions, including failure to stay at home, testing positive for THC and cocaine several times and because he had two new arrest warrants for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and assault family impeding breath and circulation.

In January 2022, the Elsa Police Department announced the search for Becerra was underway, and he was described as armed and dangerous.

The following month, Becerra was arrested in DeKalb County, Alabama after attempting to flee on foot.

The State notified the court in March 2023 that it would not seek the death penalty. Records show that he has a trial scheduled for Feb. 26.
