Judge Guerra gives update on eagerly anticipated Soluna data center project

RAYMONDVILLE, Texas – Soluna Holdings, Inc., is a developer of green data centers for intensive computing applications including Bitcoin mining and AI.

The company plans to build a 166-megawatt data center on the site of the Las Majadas Wind Farm in the southeast corner of Willacy County. The data center would be powered by the excess electricity produced by nearby wind farms.

Willacy County Judge Aurelio ‘Keter’ Guerra is a big supporter of the project. He argues that having data centers in his county will improve the tax base and spur other industrial development.

The Rio Grande Guardian caught up with Judge Guerra in Raymondville recently and asked if he could provide an update on Soluna’s “Project Kati.” He was happy to do so, saying a tax abatement agreement should be finalized soon.

“We’ve pretty much agreed to a (tax abatement) agreement, so it is moving forward, phase one and phase two,” Guerra said, pointing out that the county had hired a specialist tax abatement attorney to handle the project.

“This abatement is for phase one, and the idea is that within the next five years, we’ll be working on another abatement agreement for phase two.”

Guerra continued: “For a county like ours, what we do is we look for new value, and this adds to the value. And yes, we’re giving them an abatement. But needless to say, those abatements will go away in ten years and so, hopefully, we will have more new projects within those ten years.”

He added: “We want to grow our tax base and so, along with that, comes other types of opportunities to be able to do just that.”
