Holiday Hoops: Vaqueros to host UTRGV Holiday Classic

EDINBURG — The UTRGV women’s basketball team is set to usher in the Christmas break by hosting the UTRGV Holiday Classic on today and Friday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in Edinburg.

The UTRGV Holiday Classic will feature four games over two days that include the Vaqueros, fellow Southland Conference member Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Eastern Michigan and Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC).

“It’s going to be warm weather down here in South Texas, so we’re bringing in two teams from the North. We get to showcase the Valley, showcase our city and our university, so it’s going to be a fun event,” UTRGV head coach Lane Lord said. “We’ve got two quality teams coming in — Eastern Michigan from the (Mid-American Conference) and the University of Missouri-Kansas City from the Summit League. Us and Corpus Christi are kind of co-hosting this, so two teams from South Texas vs. two teams from the North and we’re looking forward to the matchups.”

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (5-4, 0-1 SLC) will tip off the UTRGV Holiday Classic against UMKC (3-9 Summit) at 4 p.m. today at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. The UTRGV women’s basketball team (4-6, 1-1 SLC) will follow against Eastern Michigan (1-6 MAC) with a 6:30 p.m. start time.

Day 2 of the UTRGV Holiday Classic gets underway at 4 p.m. Friday with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi vs. Eastern Michigan. The Vaqueros are scheduled to close the show against UMKC at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

UTRGV athletics is holding a coat drive to help those in need during the Holiday Classic. Fans can bring a new or gently used coat to the games on both days to receive free admission. All other fans can purchase tickets at UTRGVTickets.com.
