DONNA, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Donna High School Floral Design Club has earned recognition for a uniquely designed Christmas tree.

Art teacher Vicky Avila and her club have been awarded first place in the High School Division of the 2024 Christmas Tree Forest at the International Museum of Science and Art.

The exhibit is a school tradition and showcases the creativity and ingenuity of the community from pre-schoolers to adults.

This year's theme was "Celebrating the Arts" and participants could choose an artist, artistic movement, fiber arts, sculpture or architecture and more to celebrate various art styles.

The club chose abstract artist Georgia O'Keeffe as inspiration for their tree.

"I'm really proud that my students chose Georgia O'Keeffe," said Avila. "They were really excited about it and learning about the different flowers that she enjoyed painting."

The students worked hard on the tree and used recycled items to make the decorations.

"I just wanted to be perfect, just like this is exactly what she did in her painting," said Junior Deanndra Silva. "I wanted to resemble what she did. To be perfect and to look like the picture."

The tree is currently on display at IMAS until Jan. 2.
