A 50-year-old Hidalgo man was arrested Monday for practicing dentistry without a license or permit on three different women, causing them physical harm by leaving the roots of their extracted teeth, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Gerardo Casas Fernandez was charged with three counts of dentistry act violation for performing botched dental procedures on Maria Rosa Salinas, Maria Elva Delgado and Maria Villarreal.
On June 1, 2023, a Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to a residence in La Joya in reference to dentistry without a license.
The deputy met with Delgado and her sister, Salinas, who stated that their teeth were bothering them, so they asked their daughter-in-law Nancy to find them a dentist, according to the affidavit.
Nancy found Casas who does house calls.
Delgado and Salinas met with Casas at Nancy’s house where he removed some of their teeth, but the sisters didn’t feel like Casas did a good job as they began to feel pain in their mouths months later.
The sisters added that Casas measured them for dentures but claimed they were measured wrong because they didn’t fit right and caused pain, and they wanted to press charges.
An investigator later met with Salinas who added that she paid $1,800 for teeth removal and dentures.
The investigator later met with Villarreal who also found Casas through her friend Nancy.
Villarreal also paid $1,800 for teeth removal and dentures. According to Villarreal, Cass extracted 10 of her teeth and measured her for dentures. However, Villarreal never received her dentures and still didn’t have teeth at the time police spoke to her.
Investigators then contacted Casas but he refused to cooperate with the investigation, according to the affidavit.
Casas was taken into custody on Monday and was released Wednesday on $67,500 in bonds.
