HIDALGO COUNTY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Hidalgo County is assessing the damage left behind by Tropical Storm Alberto.

Hidalgo County officials say they were well prepared for the storm. Drains were cleared days before the storm moved through the area.

Tropical Storm Alberto downgraded to Tropical Depression

Hidalgo County Emergency Management Coordinator Ricardo Saldaña says some of the damage the area received included downed power lines, minor flooding and vehicle crashes.

"Remember, our grounds are already saturated, and if we get more rains out of this event, we may get a little worse, but we need to prepare for that. All of us need to do our part," he said.

The news comes after Governor Greg Abbott signed a Disaster Proclamation, certifying that Tropical Storm Alberto poses a threat of imminent disaster, including widespread and severe property damage, injury and loss of life due to flooding, life-threatening storm surge, damaging wind and heavy rainfall.

Saldaña remains hopeful, crediting the new drainage work.
