DONNA, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred just after midnight on Sunday.
According to a news release from HCSO, at approximately 12:39 a.m., deputies responded to a domestic dispute at the 4000 block of Amelia Lane in rural Donna.
At the scene, authorities say a responding patrol unit was intentionally hit at a high rate of speed by a vehicle after exiting the residence they were called to.
The suspect, later identified as 34-year-old Javier Aguilar, exited his vehicle and approached the deputy, in a "threatening manner."
The release stated that the deputy feared for his safety and fired his duty weapon, shooting Aguilar in the torso.
Aguilar was taken to McAllen Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:20 a.m. by Justice of Peace Jason Pena, Precinct 5 Place 1.
The deputy was also taken to the hospital for injuries caused by the airbag deployment. He has since been released from the hospital.
Hidalgo County Major Crime Investigators and Crime Scene Specialists were called to the scene to investigate.
A preliminary investigation revealed that on Saturday evening, Aguilar had been involved in a "heated argument" with his partner after attending an event.
During the argument, Aguilar allegedly threatened to harm law enforcement if they were called.
