A Harlingen man is dead after going airborne and crashing into a canal while driving an ATV in Santa Maria on Saturday, the Texas Department of Public Safety said in a press release.
At around 9:11 p.m., 29-year-old Justin Gutierrez was driving an ATV on Bowers Road and FM 2556 with another male passenger.
According to the release, neither men were restrained or wearing helmets.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Gutierrez and his passenger were traveling westbound on Bowers Road which is a dirt road approaching a T-intersection with FM 2556.
Gutierrez drove through the intersection and went airborne over a canal, crashing front first on the other side of the canal, according to the release.
The two riders were transported to Valley Baptist Medical Center with serious bodily injuries.
The following day, on Sunday, Gutierrez died at the hospital due to his injuries. The passenger remained hospitalized.
DPS Troopers continue to investigate the fatal crash.
