“At H-E-B, we’ve always believed that when people and communities come together, we can accomplish incredible things, and that belief is the reason we are all here. Today, I’m proud to announce that H-E-B is donating $1 million to Driscoll Children’s Hospital.”
Luedeker continued: “We hope that this gift will not only support the incredible care that is already being provided but help ensure that more children in the Rio Grande Valley and the surrounding areas will have better access to personalized medical treatments, cutting edge technologies and the world class care they deserve.”
Luedeker added: “It’s about giving children the opportunity to thrive, heal and grow, to live healthy lives. H-E-B has always been committed to supporting the communities we serve, and today, we are proud to stand with Driscoll Children’s Hospital in this important mission. Thank you.”
Matt Wolthoff, president of Driscoll Children’s Hospital of the Rio Grande Valley, explained how the funds H-E-B are donating will be spent.
“This $1 million gift will allow us to invest in state-of-the-art equipment for our children here in the Rio Grande Valley. These funds will ensure that our patients have access to cutting edge care and the tools they need for recovery from serious injury, illness and surgeries.”
Wolthoff said that in recognition of an “extraordinary gift,” Driscoll is proud to name the lobby at its Edinburg facility the H-E-B Lobby.
“HEB’s commitment to our mission helps every child and family we serve in this community.”
Wolthoff pointed out that Driscoll Children’s Hospital of the Rio Grande Valley has only been open for just over eight months. He said they have been an “incredibly successful” eight months.
“We have made the lot made the difference in the lives of so many children and families here at home, here in the Rio Grande Valley, so many examples of children and families that would have had to travel otherwise, if we were not here for that care.”
Wolthoff also pointed out that H-E-B has also helped Driscoll in Corpus Christi, the hospital system’s original home base, with generous gifts towards its rehabilitation program.
“Gifts like this and community partners like H-E-B are what make that possible for Driscoll,” Wolthoff said. “We were built on philanthropy, and it continues to be how we do what we do. So, much like Driscoll Children’s Hospital, H-E-B is a long-standing history of serving our community here at home in South Texas, and we just we honor that, and we appreciate that so much.”
Eric Hamon, president and CEO of Driscoll Health System, said the $1 million gift from H-E-B is “really an investment in the future of the children’s health and well-being of South Texas. What a phenomenal vision.”
Hamon said that in his younger years, he had the privilege of working directly with the H.E. Butt family in Corpus Christi as well as the Driscolls.
“When I think about the core values of the H-E-B family and now the H-E-B organization, it was all about people and family and community and always trying to do the right thing, which is very similar to the Driscoll family,” Hamon said.
“What the Driscolls wanted was that all the children of South Texas would be taken care of regardless of their ability to pay. And it is friends like H-E-B that have those similar core values that we partner with and that we appreciate very much.”
Hamon added: “(H-E-B), we appreciate you very much. I know that the families of South Texas appreciate it. Driscoll appreciates it. We thank you. You’re one of the best partners that we could ever believe in.”
