EDINBURG, Texas – Legendary Rio Grande Valley physician Dr. Alberto “Beto” Gutierrez has announced his top legislative agenda item ahead of the 89th session – more mobile clinics to treat those who cannot afford health insurance.
Asked what advice he has for state lawmakers, Gutierrez said: “I would like them to… if they have any extra money in their budget, maybe to come and set up some mobile health clinics and treat people free of charge. Oh, that would be a tremendous help. They would be very, very busy. That would be nice.”
The Valley, and Laredo, gets something like this for two weeks a year when military medical personnel provide free medical exams and immunizations. Gutierrez said they do great work.
“They’re very busy, but they could be busy all year round if they came down,” he said.
Gutierrez, who served as medical director of Hope Family Health Center for many years, gave his advice to lawmakers during a wide-ranging interview with the Rio Grande Guardian.
In the interview, Gutierrez spoke about his doctor’s practice in Carlsbad, New Mexico, coming back to the RGV, working at HOPE, his retirement from the clinic earlier this year, and the value of DHR Health, where he serves as a medical consultant.
