Fundraiser held for victims of ATV crash

MISSION, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A fundraiser and candlelight vigil was held for the victims of an ATV accident that occurred on Tuesday.

Family members held the fundraiser on Saturday and informed ValleyCentral that their goal was to sell approximately 600 chicken plates.

Reselma De La Rosa, a family member, told ValleyCentral, that all proceeds from the fundraiser will go to medical expenses and funeral arraignments.

Following the fundraiser, a candlelight vigil was held in Edinburg, for 11-year-old, Jesse Jeremiah Cantu, who is in critical condition following the ATV crash.

Background

On Tuesday, Nov. 26, authorities responded to an accident near the 9900 block of North Iowa Road in Mission.

According to a release from the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office, a 5-year-old, identified as Jariel Cantu and 11-year-old Jesse Cantu, crashed an ATV into a tree on their parent's property.

Both parents found the boys near the property and took them to the hospital for medical treatment.

Jariel Cantu was later pronounced dead following the accident. Authorities say, Jesse Cantu remains in critical but stable condition.

According to a previous ValleyCentral article, the parents are not facing any criminal charges at this state of the investigation.

Deputies are speaking with witnesses to gather additional information on the accident.
