Former IDEA Edinburg Quest and University of Texas mid-distance runner Valery Tobias finished second in the 800-meter run during the 2025 USATF Indoor Championships at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in New York, New York this past weekend, securing a spot to represent Team USA at the 2025 World Athletics Indoor Championships in March.
The 2025 World Athletics Indoor Championships are set for March 21-23 at the Nanjing Sports Training Center in Nanjing, China.

The McAllen native recorded a personal best time of 1 minute, 59.55 seconds during Sunday’s finals to punch her ticket to China, finishing second behind Nia Akins (1:59.31). Tobias’ time ranks No. 5 in the world this season according to the latest World Athletics’ rankings, with Akins ranking third.
Tobias, who runs professionally for Brooks Beasts Track Club, secured a spot in Sunday’s finals after winning her preliminary heat with a time of 2:00.64.
She followed it up by breaking the sub-2 minute mark for the first time in her career. The second-place finish also earned Tobias’ first Team USA roster spot, previously attempting to make the team during the 2024 Olympic trials.
