HOUSTON, Texas – McAllen optometrist Dr. Fred Farias, III, says he is honored to have met up with Nobel Prize winner Dr. James P. Allison at a recent MD Anderson Cancer Center board of visitors meeting in Houston.
Allison, who was born and raised in Alice, Texas, is regental professor and founding director of the James P. Allison Institute at MD Anderson. In 2014, he was awarded the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences in 2014 and shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Tasuku Honjo in 2018.
“Jim Allison won the Nobel Prize for discovering immunotherapy for cancer care. He grew up in Alice, Texas, and went to the University of Texas in Austin. He leads the Jim Allison Cancer therapy center at MD Anderson,” said Farias, a member of the MD Anderson Cancer Center board of visitors.
“Of all the famous people I have a photo of, Dr. Allison is special since he is an immunologist and his research has saved thousands of lives. I have a degree in cellular and molecular biology and the work his lab is doing is remarkable.”
