Rio Grande Valley talent was on full display last Thursday as Grupo Frontera and producer Édgar Barrera won Latin Grammys during the award show’s 25th anniversary in Miami.
The Edinburg-based Norteño group’s 2023 release “El Comienzo” won the best norteño album award and their single with Grupo Firme “El Amor de Su Vida” won best regional song. They were also nominated for best contemporary Mexican music album and song of the year for their single “(Entre Paréntesis)” with Shakira.
“We’re beyond proud to see them representing Edinburg on the world stage,” the city of Edinburg wrote on Facebook. “Keep shining, guys!”
The city has previously declared Feb. 16 as “Grupo Frontera Day” back in March 2023, where they affectionately dubbed the group as the Sons of Edinburg as well as designating the city as their hometown.
Thursday’s win tallies up Grupo Frontera’s Latin Grammys awards to three as they previously won best regional song in 2023 with their song “un x100to” featuring Bad Bunny.
Meanwhile, Édgar Barrera once again led nominations for a second year in a row as he was up for nine awards, winning three: producer of the year, songwriter of the year and best regional song (alongside Grupo Frontera as well as having another song he co-wrote being nominated in this category).
He also produced Grupo Frontera’s award-winning album “El Comienzo.”
The Mexican-American composer, who was born in McAllen and grew up in Miguel Alemán, Tamaulipas, previously led last year’s Latin Grammys nominations with 13 and ended up winning three including the newly established songwriter of the year category — which he picked up again this year.
His work also garnered nominations in other categories this year such as record of the year, album of the year and song of the year (where he had three different songs in the same category: Grupo Frontera and Shakira’s “(Entre Paréntesis),” Karol G’s “Mi Ex Tenía Razón” and Maluma and Carin León’s “Según Quién.”
Barrera’s work continues to impress as this is his fourth year in a row where a song he had a hand in writing wins best regional song of the year. Last year’s title was held by Grupo Frontera’s “un x100to” featuring Bad Bunny, with Matisse and Carin León’s “Como lo Hice Yo” winning in 2022 and Christian Nodal’s “Aquí Abajo” winning in 2021.
