Edinburg PD recognizes first female Lieutenant

EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Edinburg Police Department held its 3rd annual Police Awards on Wednesday.

This special event recognized department members' hard work, dedication and heroism, including milestone promotions and lifesaving actions.

The department also celebrated Sgt. Sandra E. Tapia as she became the first female in department history to be promoted to lieutenant.

Tapia says women are breaking barriers in law enforcement and can be leaders in the profession.

"Law enforcement has been a field dominated by men and times are changing," she said. "Women in law enforcement are contributing to this profession with their unique perspectives, skills and resilience. We're showing that leadership, integrity and courage are not defined by gender."

Additional recognitions included lifesaving awards, support staff of the year and the distinguished Chief`s Coin recognition, presented to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service and commitment to the community.
