The man suspected of stabbing a woman during an altercation in Edinburg on Tuesday has been identified, according to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.
Luis Gonzalez Jr., 22, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault.
At around 10:20 a.m. on Tuesday, the sheriff’s office received a 911 call reporting a man and woman were engaged in a verbal altercation on the side of the road in the 2200 block of Laguna Seca Road, according to a press release.
Deputies were dispatched to the area in regards to a domestic dispute in progress.
The female also placed a distress call where she stated that she had sustained injuries and was in need of immediate assistance, according to the release.
Once deputies arrived, they found that the Texas Department of Public Safety had already responded and that the woman had been stabbed multiple times by Gonzalez.
According to the release, the woman had already left the scene in a bystander’s vehicle in an effort to seek medical attention.
At the scene, witnesses stayed with Gonzalez who became increasingly aggressive upon the arrival of police, the release said.
“As DPS troopers attempted to place him under arrest, the suspect actively resisted,” the release said. “He then fled the scene in a witness’ vehicle, injuring the vehicle’s owner and prompting a pursuit involving DPS.”
Gonzalez was later apprehended by DPS and is currently in custody.
The woman is reported to be in stable condition, the release said.
Gonzalez remains in custody at the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on a total of $350,000 in bonds.
