An Edinburg police officer shot and killed a man Tuesday night after the man pointed a gun at a SWAT team member, according to a news release.
The shooting happened after police were called to the 2800 block of El Paso Street at approximately 9:30 p.m. after a report of a man threatening a neighbor and waving a firearm.
“Upon arrival, officers encountered the armed individual, 58-year-old Felipe Zuniga,” the release stated. “Mr. Zuniga then brandished the apparent weapon and pointed it at officers prompting shots to be fired before he barricaded himself inside a residence.”
Police established a perimeter and attempted negotiations with a SWAT team, according to the release, which said those attempts were unsuccessful.
Police then used a Bearcat vehicle to try to breach the doorway and deploy a phone in an effort to reach him, according to the release.
“At this point, Zuniga allegedly pointed the weapon again at a SWAT team member, leading an officer to fire, striking Zuniga,” the release stated.
Zuniga was transported to the hospital where he died.
The release said the fatal shooting is under investigation by the department’s Internal Affairs and the Texas Rangers.
Authorities did not identify the officer who shot and killed Zuniga.
