Edinburg Fire Marshal shares firework safety tips ahead of New Year's Day celebrations

EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Popping fireworks is a popular tradition when ringing in the new year.

The Edinburg Fire Department is sharing tips on how to be safe when popping fireworks while still having fun.

"We would strongly recommend adult supervision for all fireworks," said Anthony Riojas, Fire Marshal with the Edinburg Fire Department. "Supervise your children. Supervise your family. Be aware of their surroundings."

Riojas recommends mowing the lawn to reduce the risk of grass catching fire and spreading.

"If something does happen in any circumstance, please call for help immediately. Don't hesitate," Riojas continued. "Don't try to put things out yourself. Get the proper authorities responding as soon as you need."
