EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Edinburg Fire Department has acquired six thermal imaging cameras that make it easier to identify hidden heat sources during structure fires.
According to the department, the imaging cameras were funded through a $28,575 award from the Homeland Security Grant Program.
Thermal imaging cameras allow firefighters to detect overheating and circuit overloads in electrical and mechanical systems, identify hidden heat sources during structure fires, and conduct more efficient search and rescue operations.
The new technology is expected to improve local and regional emergency responses, ensuring the safety of firefighters and the community. The department began rolling out the cameras in November.
“We are always seeking ways to enhance our services and keep our community safe,” said Edinburg Fire Chief Omar Garza. “These thermal imaging cameras provide a major upgrade to our department, allowing us to respond more quickly and effectively in emergency situations.”
