Edinburg CISD takes legal action against insurance company

EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District is taking legal action against an insurance company for an alleged unresolved hurricane claim.

According to Edinburg CISD, the district faces challenges after Hurricane Hanna made landfall on South Texas in July 2020.

The aftermath of Hurricane Hanna left damages to all areas of the Rio Grande Valley including flooded homes, collapsed buildings and power outages.

"The educational environment and student welfare are our utmost priorities. We cannot compromise on our teaching standards due to infrastructure damages," Edinburg CISD Board President Carmen Gonzalez said.

A upcoming pivotal court hearing will request the immediate payment of undisputed amounts by the district's ensurer.

"ECISD faces significant challenges in obtaining funds for repairs from their insurer," a release from the district stated.

The court hearing scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, March 4 inside the 476th District Court in Edinburg.

This is the first part of the legal proceeding followed by a jury trial for disputed claims starting May 6.
