Harlingen Fire Chief Rafael Balderas said the driver noticed smoke coming from her car, so she quickly pulled over.

He said that’s when she noticed the flames underneath the vehicle. He said she got her cat and herself out of the car before either one of them was hurt.

Traffic in the area was stalled for a short time on the highway and the frontage road. Some motorists even drive over the grassy median to avoid the delays.
