Driver in 2022 deadly Thanksgiving hit-and-run sentenced to 6 years

PHARR, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A San Juan man was sentenced to six years in jail for fatally striking a man with his car and leaving the scene on Thanksgiving, documents say.

Manuel Canchola was charged with accident involving death, according to Hidalgo Court documents.

As previously reported by ValleyCentral, on Nov. 24, 2022, a man, identified as 54-year-old Gilberto Delgado, was fatally hit by a car on Cage Boulevard and Helmer Street. A witness told investigators a small dark passenger car hit Delgado and drove away from the scene.

Delgado was taken to McAllen Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

On Nov. 26, 2022, Canchola, along with Pharr resident Natalie Monique Carreon, turned themselves in to police. According to the report, Carreon was charged with failure to report a felony.

On Thursday, Canchola was sentenced to six years in jail. Carreon has a pre-trial hearing scheduled for Aug. 22.
