HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Texas Department of Transportation said over 1,000 people died in Texas last year as a result of drunk driving.

Thousands of families and communities across Texas are facing the painful and unnecessary consequences of those deaths.

This year TxDOT’s Drive Sober. No Regrets. campaign is fighting to prevent these crashes and deaths.

Sgt. Sal Carmona with the Harlingen Police Department said, "Plan ahead. If you're going out to drink, have a plan to get somebody to get you home safely. More importantly, have a backup plan in case the primary plan fails, you want to make sure that you don't drink and drive you want to drive sober, no regrets. If you're going to drink, make sure you are not the person driving. We want to make sure you understand that your judgment is the first thing that goes."
