EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley officially opened its doors on Wednesday.

Driscoll's news release said the new hospital is prepared to provide acute pediatric specialty care 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

“Our team is excited and ready to serve this community. From this moment on, children in the Rio Grande Valley with complex medical conditions will have access to care here at home, regardless of their ability to pay,” said Matt Wolthoff, President of Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley.

Driscoll sees more than 150,000 patients a year, and many regularly make the journey from the RGV to Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi to receive specialty care.

“The need for patients and their families to be close to home is why this hospital exists today. Proximity and accessibility to our kids was at the forefront of our mind before we ever broke ground or drew up blueprints,” said Driscoll President and CEO Eric Hamon.

Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley features 119 pediatric beds, including 63 NICU beds, over 700 employees, eight surgery suite operating rooms, and 175,000 square feet.

The new hospital is located at 2820 W. Michaelangelo Dr. in Edinburg.
