EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The mother of an honorable Edinburg resident who died in U.S. Military Service has passed away.
Dolia Gonzalez, the mother of U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Alfredo "Freddy" Gonzalez, passed away at 94 years old.
Her death was announced Tuesday morning by American Legion Post 408.
"It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of a true beacon of light in our community, Ms. Dolia Gonzalez, a Gold Star Mother and a long-standing Auxiliary member of our American Legion Post 408," the Post announced.
During her lifetime, Dolia raised her son Freddy as a single mother until his passing in 1968 while serving in the Vietnam War.
Since Freddy's death, Dolia Gonzalez has received several awards and honors on her son’s behalf including a road, school, a memorial park, a Veterans home and a U.S. Navy destroyer named for him.
American Legion Post 408 has also been named and honored on behalf of the Gonzalez family.
"Her unwavering dedication to our post and her community has touched the lives of so many. Ms. Gonzalez strength, grace, and enduring love will be forever remembered," American Legion Post 408 continued. "She has left an indelible mark on all of us, and her presence will be sorely missed. Our hearts go out to her family during this difficult time. May she rest in peace, reunited with her beloved son."
The City of Edinburg shared their condolences on Dolia's passing Tuesday morning.
"We extend our heartfelt condolences on the loss of Ms. Dolia Gonzalez, a beloved Gold Star Mother and a cornerstone of our community," the City of Edinburg stated. "Mother and a cornerstone of our community. As the proud mother of Edinburg's Medal of Honor recipient, Alfredo 'Freddy' Gonzalez, Ms. Gonzalez's unwavering commitment to our city has profoundly impacted countless lives. Her legacy will forever be remembered in Edinburg."
