BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A resident of Mexico was sentenced to prison for attempting to re-enter the United States while carrying a controlled substance after he was previously deported, according to federal authorities.

Ricardo Rios Alanis, 47, was sentenced to five years in prison for his re-entry attempt earlier this year.

Alanis led authorities on a high-speed chase on February 21 after he was seen speeding by the Rio Grande in Brownsville.

As authorities attempted to stop the vehicle, Alanis continued at a high rate of speed, eventually losing a tire, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Law enforcement made their way to Alanis and noticed bundles within the vehicle.

During a search of the vehicle, authorities found 10 bundles containing marijuana weighing at approximately 448.5 pounds.

U.S. Department of Justice says Alanis has attempted to re-enter the U.S. after removal three other times.

Rios-Alanis has been and will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.
