PHARR, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A Pharr couple is facing charges after a child found a handgun in a drawer and shot a 4-year-old girl, documents revealed.

Armando Gonzalez and Madison Gonzalez were each arrested by the Pharr Police Department on charges of making a firearm accessible to a child resulting in serious bodily injury, jail records show.

A probable cause affidavit stated that at 11:05 p.m. on May 30, an investigator was dispatched to an apartment at the 3600 block of South Embassy Avenue in reference to a girl who was shot.

The investigator spoke with the victim's mother, who said that she was babysitting for her other daughter who was out of town. The only ones in the apartment that day were her, her 4-year-old daughter, her son and her grandson, the document stated.

While she was downstairs cleaning, the woman said she heard a noise that sounded like a firecracker. She rushed upstairs and found that her 4-year-old daughter had a gunshot wound to her hand, and saw a gun in a drawer, the affidavit details.

The woman asked the 4-year-old girl how she was shot, to which she replied that her brother found a gun in the drawer, which slipped from his hand.

The investigator spoke with the daughter who was out of town, identified as Madison Gonzalez, who said that she was not aware there was a gun in the apartment. According to the affidavit, she said that her boyfriend had a gun and probably left it there.

When investigator's reached out to the man, first believed to be Madison's boyfriend, he said her boyfriend was actually Armando Gonzalez. Additionally the man said he had left the gun with Armando a few days prior.

The following day, authorities obtained a search warrant and found ammunition, magazines, two handguns and a black digital camera at the apartment. The affidavit stated the camera had photos of Madison posing with a handgun that resembled the one used in the shooting. The background of the photos was identified as the same bedroom the shooting occurred.

Madison was booked into the Hidalgo County Jail on June 11 and released the following day on a $1,000 bond. Armando was booked on June 17 and released on a $15,000 bond.
