
LA FERIA — Corpus Christi Moody held Sharyland Pioneer to just two points in overtime as the Trojans held off the Diamondbacks 62-58 to end their season in the Class 5A DII area round Friday at the La Feria gym.
The victory advances the Trojans to a Region IV-5A DII quarterfinal, where they’ll take on the winner of the game between Liberty Hill and San Antonio Southside.
Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks’ season ends with a 27-10 overall record, including a 15-1 mark during district for their second straight 31-5A title.
Friday’s contest seemed destined for overtime throughout the game, with neither team leading by more than four after each period.
The Trojans jumped out to a 20-16 lead after one behind a combined 12 points from Aaliyah and Shantaye Hazel.
The Diamondbacks cut it to a three-point game at the half thanks to a stout defensive presence inside the paint by senior Anika Fleischman and timely buckets from sophomore Ebonie Chatman.
A pair of 3s by Chatman during the third led to Pioneer’s first lead at the end of a quarter, as they headed into the fourth with a 43-42 advantage.
The teams traded buckets during the final period, with Chatman and Shantaye leading the charge for their respective teams. A quick bucket and a pair of free throws by Shantaye gave the Trojans a 54-51 lead with 3:38 remaining.
The teams traded free throws to keep it a three-point game late, with the Diamondbacks trailing the Trojans 56-53 with less than a minute remaining.
A corner 3-pointer by Chatman with 33 seconds remaining tied the contest late to send it to overtime, but that’s as close as they got, with the Trojans outscoring the Diamondbacks 6-2 in the extra period to come away with the win.
Shantaye led the way for the Trojans with a game-high-tying 20 points, including nine during the fourth quarter and overtime combined. Raelene Avalos added 16 points.
Chatman paced the way for the Diamondbacks, finishing with 20 points. Fleischmann added 17 points before fouling out of the contest with 1:28 remaining in overtime.
