HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Thursday's downpour of rain caused record flooding across the Rio Grande Valley. By Thursday evening, many roads were completely flooded with water going all the way up ramps to enter and exit the highway.
The scenes were eerie as many abandoned vehicles could be seen along the roadway and expressway due to stalls caused by the water.
By Friday afternoon, communities went into rescue mode, attempting to clear roadways and call towing companies to pick up abandoned vehicles.
Parts of the expressway that are closer to ground level could be seen full of dirt and debris that has been picked up by the floods. Additionally, many roads across the Valley are experiencing the same debris.
The City of San Benito is joining in the recovery efforts to clear out mud and gunk from the frontage roads.
In Harlingen, the city is doing curbside pickups for debris.
"No need to take anything to the landfill, we've got you covered," the city stated.
Crews will pick up debris during regularly scheduled pickup days.
To ensure your items are picked up properly, follow the following guidelines:
- Separate brush from any furniture you place curbside.
- Separate appliances like refrigerators, stoves, etc. from other items.
- Place your items on the curb as soon as possible so our crews can safely and efficiently collect them.
