Data report: Latest sales tax revenue figures for the Lower RGV cities

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The latest sales tax revenue reports for Texas cities have been posted by the Texas Comptroller’s Office. 

The year-to-date period has reached November 2024. 

Sales tax is a consumption tax levied on the sale of goods and services. It is important source of revenue for governments at the state and local levels. Texas imposes a 6.25 percent state sales and use tax on all retail sales, leases and rentals of most goods.  Local taxing jurisdictions (cities, counties, special purpose districts and transit authorities) can also impose up to 2 percent sales and use the tax for a maximum combined rate of 8.25 percent.

The Rio Grande Guardian, in collaboration with Allied Consulting Group, has analyzed the latest data, which shows the first nine months of 2024.

Looking at the cities in Cameron County, Brownsville leads the way with $53.6 million worth of sales tax revenues, followed by Harlingen with $30.9 million, and San Benito at $6.6 million.

Looking at the cities in Willacy County, Raymondville led the way with $1.5 million.

In terms of percentage growth, year-on-year, Port Isabel’s sales tax revenues have grown by a staggering 19.41 percent.
