Dangerous heat anticipated across Valley today

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Above average temperatures and high humidity values are causing heat alerts throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

A heat advisory is in effect for Cameron County until 8 p.m. For Willacy and Hidalgo counties, there is an excessive heat warning between 1 and 8 p.m. Temperatures in these areas can feel as hot as 118 degrees Fahrenheit.

Know the Difference Between Heat Alerts

Heat related illnesses can increase significantly during these events.

To prevent disaster, drink plenty of water and fluids, stay in air conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun if possible, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions when working outside or while spending time outside. If possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours. Try to wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing.

Remember that young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles.
