City of Pharr announces 2nd annual Avocado Festival

PHARR, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The City of Pharr has announced the return of its Avocado Festival along with Fresh on the Border Week of festivities.

This year will mark the 2nd annual Avocado Festival and 11th annual Fresh on the Border Week, celebrations that showcase the city's history and impact in the produce industry.

The city's Avocado Festival is one of many initatives celebrated during Fresh on the Border Week, the week that recognizes the start of produce season.

According to the city, Pharr is a leading produce crossing point, bringing over 60% of the nation's produce through the Pharr International Bridge.

"It's an opportunity for the community to come out and really learn more about our international grades, everything that our bridge has to offer, and how impactful it is to our city and our city operations," said Jonathan Flores, Mayor of Pharr.

Fresh on the Border Week will kickoff October 9 followed by festivities through October 12.

The following is a list of Fresh on the Border Week festivities:

  • Wednesday, October 9: Golf Tournament Kick-off
  • Thursday, October 10: Start of the Produce Season
  • Friday, October 11: Trade Talks
  • Saturday, October 12: Avocado Festival
