PALMVIEW, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The City of Palmview announced it will be opening the doors of its first public library this week.
A special ceremony will be led by city leaders to mark the city's historic moment. This will be the first public library for the city since it was incorporated in 1972.
"This will truly be more than just a place to check out books," Palmview Mayor Ricardo Villarreal said.
Villarreal and city leaders anticipate the public library to serve as an essential community resource center, filling in gaps to expand education and literacy.
The library will offer residents a variety of programs including GED/ESL, computer and citizenship classes.
"We want our residents to recognize it as a place, where they can get the help, they need,” Mayor Villarreal continued.
Residents will also be able to visit the library for creative and recreational activities such as story time for children, arts and crafts, book discussions and board game nights.
The grand opening ceremony will begin at noon, Saturday, March 23 at 505 Palmview Commercial Drive.
Following the ceremony, the library program will kickoff with two Valley authors who will read their respective published children's book to the community.
