HARLINGEN, TEXAS – Harlingen Economic Development Corporation CEO Orlando Campos gave a 26-minute power point presentation to potential investors.

Campos spoke about the advantages of investing in Harlingen at a Commercialization and Investment Tour hosted by the Rio Grande Valley Partnership. It was held at Texas State Technical College in Harlingen.

In his presentation, Campos spoke about why businesses chose to move to Harlingen. He said a lot of the growth was due to its young workforce population and its central location in the RGV. Harlingen is benefiting from growth in other parts of the region, he said.

“We recognize we are part of a much larger region,” Campos said. Within a 60-mile radius of Harlingen, Campos said, is a population of 1.3 million, and that population is relatively young. By contrast, Harlingen’s population is roughly 73,143. “But we are growing,” Campos said.

Campos then spoke about connectivity. He said Harlingen is blessed by having two interstate highways – I-2 and I-69 East. He said the city is also blessed to have Valley International Airport, the Port of Harlingen, and the Free Trade International Bridge at Los Indios. This bridge includes an overweight corridor from the bridge to I-69 East, Campos pointed out.

On the education front, Harlingen EDC works closely with TSTC-Harlingen, Campos said. And the City’s school districts produce students that are college, career, and community ready, Campos said, proudly.

Turning to industrial parks in Harlingen, Campos pointed to a large park Valley International
Airport has, and a smaller park at the Port of Harlingen. Campos said he expected great things from the new Industrial Park at Roosevelt.

As for Valle Vista Mall, which is largely empty, Campos said: “t does have its challenges, but we are looking to overcome these challenges. It is a great location with quick access to the entire Valley.”

As for new residential homes, Campos said there is a need for more options. He said Harlingen is a “safe investment for people to build new homes.”

Looking at the regional impacts, Campos mentioned SpaceX. He said many people live in Harlingen but work at SpaceX’s rocketing launching facility at Boca Chica.

Campos also mentioned two liquefied natural gas export terminals set to be built at the Port of Brownsville.

Campos said Harlingen “is poised to take advantage of this development.”

Campos ended his presentation by talking about his organization’s “very robust business retention and expansion program.” He said his city is “experiencing a building boom” and that “the phenomenal growth will continue to happen.”

Campos added: “We are open for business.”
