BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The mosquito population in Brownsville is booming following weeks of record rain and summer heat.

The City of Brownsville is working to mitigate the situation by spraying and monitoring the situation to keep them at bay.

Brownsville's Health Department is actively spraying mosquito repellant across the city every week. After severe weather, city workers begin the week-long process of collecting mosquito data.

The data is collected by researchers who look at the numbers and then break down the city into sections to efficiently control the mosquito population.

Arturo Rodriguez, who works for Health Wellness and Animal Services, says it takes crews of five to nine working early in the morning and late at night, when the mosquitos come out to feed, to control the situation.
