A shooting incident Tuesday involving the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Brownsville Police Department ended in a suspect being shot and who is now facing charges, as well as prompting the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley to undergo lockdown protocols at its Brownsville campus.
Brownsville police spokesman Abril Luna stated in a livestream that the shooting between police and a suspect caused school lockdowns, which were already lifted by early Tuesday afternoon.
The shooting occurred after a state trooper initiated a traffic stop that escalated into a pursuit.
During that pursuit, the suspect fired at the trooper, according to Luna.
The suspect eventually came to a stop on Harding Street, between 23rd and 22nd Street before fleeing on foot. They were later located in an alley near 22nd Street.
“During the encounter, shots were fired,” Luna said in the livestream.
She went on to say that the suspect is in custody and was taken to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries, and they face aggravated assault charges for shooting at the trooper.
Luna added that schools in the area were placed on lockdown out of an abundance of caution.
UTRGV’s Brownsville campus held a shelter in place due to heavy police presence, according to the school’s Facebook page.
“… (We’re) happy to report that these lockdowns have now been lifted and the area is secure,” Luna said.
The Texas Rangers will be investigating the shooting and police are asking the community to avoid the area as the investigation is ongoing.
