Brownsville mourns death of Erasmo Castro

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Brownsville community is mourning the death of Erasmo Castro.

Castro reportedly passed Saturday morning, according to local officials.

The well-known Brownsville native was serving as Brownsville Independent School District Board President at the time of his death.

Castro was recognized by locals as an avid member of the community, always advocating for change and invested in local issues.

Brownsville Mayor John Cowen expressed his condolences to Castro's friends and family stating he was a "tireless advocate for our community."

Cowen said Castro's leadership and passion will be greatly missed — a sentiment that seems to be shared with many Brownsville residents who have taken to social media to mourn Castro's death.

Janie Lopez, State Rep for District 37, shared the following statement on Castro's death:

"I am deeply saddened by the passing of Erasmo Castro. His kindness, wisdom and witty humor touched so many lives, and his memory will continue to inpire us."
