BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The City of Brownsville is rolling out its new mobile fair and smart card program.

The program aims to give residents to another payment option, other than cash. Users will create an account on a mobile app, load money onto a card, which can then be used to pay the bus fair.

ValleyCentral spoke with J. Joel Garza Jr., the director of multimodal transportation with the City of Brownsville.

"The app is intended to make it seamless," Garza said. "Nowadays our community doesn't even carry a wallet, they carry a phone, so it just makes it easier for our riders."

Garza said the smart cards will be free for the first 30 days after they launch.
