It’s a crowded field of candidates for the upcoming Brownsville City Commission election to fill three seats: commissioner for District 3, commissioner for District 4 and commissioner At-Large “B.”
District 3 incumbent Roy De los Santos, elected to the commission in a runoff in June 2021, will not defend his current seat but instead filed as a candidate for Commissioner At-Large “B,” which will be vacated by veteran Commissioner Rose M.Z. Gowen, first elected to the seat in 2009.
Also running for At-Large “B” are Alejandro Garcia, a “digital creator,” according to his Facebook page; Nurith Galonsky Pizana, former Commissioner for District 1 who in May 2023 lost the seat in a runoff with Bryan Martinez; and Jason Moody, president/CEO of RGV Media Group and former director of public relations and community engagement for the Brownsville Independent School District.
Vying for the District 3 seat are Yvonne Barraza, whose Facebook page describes her as a “wife, mother and business owner;” Denise Granado Chavez, a business development executive for Trane Technologies, according her LinkedIn profile; and Gustavo Manuel Deleon, a field supervisor for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
District 4 incumbent Pedro Cardenas, elected to the commission in June 2021, is defending his seat against candidates Michael Rodriguez, who made an unsuccessful bid for District 1 in 2019; Louis E. Tijerina, senior associate with CBRE commercial real estate firm; and Daisy Zamora, secretary/treasurer for Brownsville Public Utilities Board and former board member of Come Dream Come Build, formerly the Community Development Corporation of Brownsville.
Early voting begins April 22 and ends April 29. Election Day is May 3.
