EDINBURG, Texas – Edinburg Mayor Ramiro Garza has announced he has cancer and will not seek re-election.
“After a routine doctor’s visit and subsequent tests, I have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. While this comes as a complete surprise, I plan to fight this head on and I am confident I will beat it. After consulting with my family and prayer, I have decided to not seek re-election for mayor.
“I fully intend to complete my current term and wanted to make this announcement to focus on my health and give others the opportunity to prepare for a run.
“Please keep me and my family in your prayers as we deal with this situation,” Garza said, in a statement.
Garza held a hastily arranged press conference at city hall to announce the news. His wife Maria was by his side.
The City of Edinburg issued this statement on social media: “During a heartfelt press conference today, Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. made the difficult announcement that he will not be seeking re-election as he focuses on his health following a recent diagnosis of prostate cancer. He remains dedicated to serving the remainder of his term, and our entire city family stands with him during this time. Our thoughts, prayers, and support are with Mayor Garza.”
Friends and supporters took to social media to rally around the mayor. “One of the best mayors this city has ever had. Thank you for your dedicated service, Ramiro. We will keep you in our prayers,” wrote Chriselda Vera.
“Praying for you Mayor Ramiro Garza. Health and family first,” wrote Evelyn Cano.
“Prayers,” wrote Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council Executive Director Manny Cruz.
Mayor Garza later wrote: “I appreciate all the outpouring of support as I fight this.”
The election for mayor is in November. Former Edinburg Councilman Johnny Garcia had already announced he was running for mayor.
