Lateral Epicondylitis, commonly known as Tennis Elbow, is a painful condition affecting the outer bony bump of the elbow. It is often caused by repetitive movements and overuse but can occasionally result from an injury to the elbow. Activities like playing racquet sports or jobs requiring repeated twisting, gripping, or hammering—such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, cooking, or butchering—can lead to Tennis Elbow.
The Elbow is a hinged joint made up of three bones: the humerus (arm bone) and the radius and ulna (forearm bones). The two bony bumps on the outer and inner sides of the elbow are where forearm muscles originate. The outer bump, called the lateral epicondyle, is where two muscles that extend the wrist and fingers begin. The deeper, smaller muscle, called the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) is most affected by Tennis Elbow.
Certain repetitive wrist movements can strain the ECRB, causing small tears (micro tears) and chronic inflammation. This leads to pain and tenderness on the outside of the elbow, making it difficult to perform tasks involving grasping or gripping. Although Tennis Elbow may occur at any age, it most commonly affects people between the age of 30 and 50.
If you develop elbow pain that doesn’t improve with rest, modifying activities, or using over-the-counter pain medication, consult your family doctor or orthopedic surgeon. Your orthopedic surgeon will be able to give you an accurate diagnosis after obtaining a thorough history, ordering appropriate imaging studies and conducting a physical exam.
Once the tennis elbow diagnosis is confirmed, treatment usually begins with non-surgical options, including wearing a brace to reduce strain, performing specific exercises to strengthen the forearm, and using oral or topical medications for pain and inflammation. In some cases, injections may be recommended. If these treatments don’t provide relief, surgery to release the affected muscle may be considered as a last resort.
